Wellbeing Our school is a happy place where children develop a true sense of self Embracing the whole child Haberdashers' Castle House Preparatory school is a place where we take pride in the happiness of our pupils. Pastoral care on every level is at the heart of our school, for every pupil every day. We believe that a child’s emotional wellbeing is as important as their academic abilities and achievements. Kindness Counts The children are the centre of everything here, participating in drawing up policies such as our School Charter and the “Haberdashers' Castle House Way” the core of which is “kindness Counts”. We have regular pastoral assemblies which reflect these policies alongside all aspects of anti-bullying, forging positive relationships and promoting Fundamental British Values. Pastoral care is the number one priority. Kindness and consideration for others are the foundation of everything we do Family Values A family school with family values, our small class sizes allow the opportunity to really know every unique and individual child. The warmth and openness you will find here are plain to see, between staff and pupils, parents and visitors. Looking After Each Other We have a thriving Peer Mentoring system, encouraging and teaching children the life skills they need to be supportive, kind and resilient. The School Council allows for the children to make informed decisions, debate and discuss, make choices and support the school in a fair and democratic way. Our culture is one of laughter, learning and friendship Form tutors look after pupils immediate wellbeing and their academic studies. Our SENDcO is responsible for coordinating special educational needs to support and develop the potential of those needing further assistance. Learning Support Specialists provide further targeted support with interventions. Pupils mental health and wellbeing are at the forefront, and this is key to those in our care feeling supported and content. Our Head of Pastoral Care is School Counsellor and Designated Safeguarding Lead, and as a full time member of staff is always present to reach out and support pupils experiencing difficulties. The curriculum supports mental health with PSHE throughout year groups, and sex and relationship education in the upper school. We also run mental health workshops, offering support in areas which will both inform and prepare pupils, focusing on the connections between physical and mental health. We want our pupils to experience good mental health, help them to be able to master resilience and deal with stress, do well at school, and to find their way through the online world they will encounter with the ability to stay safe and benefit from this. Pastoral Care at Haberdashers' Castle House is arranged around the traditional House system. We have three Houses; Merevale, Chetwynd and Pitchford which are healthily competitive and loyal. Heads of House alongside form-tutors are key figures in the academic and personal development of each pupil throughout the school. Pupils come together regularly for House days, and our main sporting events, the swimming gala and sports day are House based. Our Forest school allows for close encounters with the environment for all of our pupils, and a sense of the world around them and its importance. We have close links with St Nicholas church in Newport, and the Rotary Club Lite, we also visit local elderly residents on occasion within the town. We believe our pastoral system provides the wraparound care needed to ensure we are able to nurture and inspire every pupil, preparing them for the next part of their journey.

Reports & Reviews Inspection Reports ISI Inspection 2025 Letter to Parents 2025 Ofsted Nursery Inspection 2023 ISI Inspection 2022 ISI Short Visit - 2020 ISI Short Visit - 2019 ISI Short Visit - 2018 ISI Inspection 2018 ISI Inspection 2014 Haberdashers' Castle House School, in conjunction with the Independent School’s Inspectorate (ISI), the Independent School’s Association (ISA), Ofsted and the DfE have undertaken a planned scheme of school improvement which is best understood through reading our Inspection Reports. We are delighted that in June 2022 The Independent School’s Inspectorate inspected Haberdashers' Castle House School and judged that we are compliant in all aspects of the Independent School’s Regulations. We moved our children to Castle House part way through a school year and I was delighted how quickly they settled in. My daughter was struggling with very low confidence levels and the support from her teachers has resulted in her moving to High School brimming with confidence and ready for the next challenge. She changed from a child who hated maths to it being her favourite subject! My son loves forest school and weekly swimming, he’s progressed fantastically since joining and we have been so pleased to review his learning post lockdown and find he is still at a very high level, reflecting the excellent levels of teaching provided via Microsoft Teams. Parent of current year 4 pupil and sibling who has now completed year 6 and moved to senior school Our son has been at Castle House since nursery. This has given him a brilliant start to school life, so the transition to Kindergarten was effortless. All the children are so polite and our son has come on in leaps and bounds. The school grounds are beautiful, staff are very supportive and nurturing and want the best for each and every child and work to their specific needs. We are looking forward to our son progressing furthermore in this excellent school. Parent of boy currently in year 1 Our son had become so disengaged with learning at his previous school. He just wasn’t getting the stimulation and engagement needed to allow him to thrive. It was affecting his mood and general happiness and every day felt like a constant battle to get him to engage in anything at all. Since starting at Castle House he has totally changed. He has loved every day at school and it is fantastic seeing him back eager to learn. To have some breadth of curriculum again in terms of PE, music and forest school has also been fantastic and done wonders for him. Learning really has been brought back to life for him and to see your child responding so positively and really enjoying learning is just brilliant. Thank you to you and all the staff for all that you have done and helping him settle so easily. Parent of boy in year 5 who joined the school during lockdown last summer Our three children have all thrived at Castle House School. All three are very different but all were nurtured, encouraged and motivated by the teachers and staff to be the best that they could be. They all loved the small and family feel environment of the school and took advantage of the sport, school trips, clubs and additional lessons that were available. Castle House School is a fantastic place for children to grow in confidence in their academic and personal education. Parent of current year 5 pupil with two older siblings who have now moved on to senior school Our son joined Castle House in Year 2. As a quiet and shy boy who was young for his year, we had been worried about how he would settle into a new school, but the calm and welcoming atmosphere and smaller classes meant that he soon grew in confidence. That increased confidence and happiness at school led to a huge improvement in his academic work, and we were so pleased when he comfortably passed his 11+ exam and was awarded a place at Haberdashers Adams. He has really enjoyed the opportunity to try all the extra-curricular activities available both during the school day and as after school clubs (although we did laugh the day he brought a cello home!), and has developed a previously unknown love and talent for art. As parents, we have particularly enjoyed seeing how the children interact across the year groups, with the older children looking out for the smaller ones, and those smaller ones feeling happy and confident playing with the ‘big ones’. We have always believed that children learn best when they are happy, and we have certainly found that at Castle House. Parent of pupil who has now moved on to senior school Our son started at Castle House last year, in Year 4. He has greatly benefitted from the warm and nurturing environment it provides and is a happy child. Parent of pupil currently in year 5 Since being at Castle House, both my children absolutely love school. I also believe their confidence has grown significantly over the last 12 months. I really like the Castle House approach to schooling and teaching and the most important thing for me is that the children are happy! And they certainly are! Parent of children currently in year 3 and year 1

  • 11+ PREPARATION | Castle House School

Our approach to 11+ Here at Haberdashers' Castle House we recognise pressures that are placed on young people and their families to pass the 11+ exam which they sit at the start of Year 6. There is no right or wrong formula to this and we would certainly advise away for 'over tutoring' children to simply pass an exam. Our approach is simple. Familiarity is key. Children that understand the format, process and expectations of examinations from an early age will stand a far greater chance of achieving their goals. What to expect from Haberdashers' Castle House GL Testing from Year 2 to ensure that children become relaxed and confident when faced with. examination conditions. These results are shared with parents Fun, interactive and age appropriate extra curricular activities Specific, targeted tutoring tailored to each individual using internal and external specialist tutors in Years 4 & 5 'Next Steps' suite with mimics the layout of typical examination conditions. Comprehensive programme of pastoral support to identify concerns early and provide support. We are a non-selective school The 11+ entry route to Senior School is not right for every child. At HCHS we pride ourselves on being a truly non-selective school. At both entry to the school and as children progress through the school, we support parents in their journey. • MOVING TO SENIOR SCHOOL | Castle House School

Senior School After Haberdashers' Castle House – what next? Haberdashers' Castle House gives a thoroughly good grounding and preparation for whichever senior school a child will move too. Able children who work hard and who receive a Haberdashers' Castle House education have a very good chance of passing the entrance exams to Adams’ Grammar School or Newport High School. It should be borne in mind that these schools offer a very academic curriculum, are highly competitive to enter and are not necessarily suitable for all children. They require the very highest level of academic ability. We help to prepare the children in Year 6 thoroughly for these examinations, with our 11+ club starting in Year 4, but we cannot guarantee the outcome. It is, after all, in the hands of the children on the day of the test. Newport is blessed in also having an excellent local comprehensive school, The Burton Borough School. Its top stream is grammar school equivalent which it proves by its examination results. It has a purpose-built Arts and Music Centre and a strong pastoral care system. Alternatively, there are some very good independent schools in the area. In recent years, some of our pupils have gone on to the independent Stafford Grammar School, for which we have an excellent record of entry passes and scholarship offers. Other pupils opt for Wrekin College, Wellington, Shrewsbury High School for Girls, Wolverhampton High School, Wolverhampton Grammar School, Ellesmere College, and Adcote School. For those looking further afield some of our pupils have achieved success in entrance examinations to Winchester School and to Cheltenham Ladies College. The headteacher and teachers give guidance and advice to parents who need it. The choice has to be made by the parents and the child and therefore parents are strongly advised to visit the senior schools to see for themselves what they are like.
